What is lower back pain?
Lower back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal issues; and because of that it is something our physiotherapists see a lot! Short term it can be debilitating, often leading to a longer term ‘tight back’ or ‘it’s just the normal ache’ type dialogue which can often be eliminated.

60% of the population suffer from back pain at some point in their lives, with a 70% chance of recurrence within 1 year.

The most common conversation we have surrounding persistent, episodic low back pain is that of rehabilitation. The same mechanics that may have contributed to the issue in the first place persist and we continue to ‘poke the same bruise’.

Research shows that the vast majority of disc issues actually heal within 3-12 months of onset, and many people have observations such as ‘dehydrated discs’ and ‘disc bulges’ on scans in the absence of any symptoms. Hearing these often makes people want to protect their back, often compounding the issue and research shows worsening outcomes!

COMMON LOW BACK PAIN MYTHS:

-
Back pain means your back is damaged
-
Back pain means something is out of place
-
Back pain means you have to strengthen your core, brace, sit up straight and keep your back straight when you try and move
-
Back pain means you should protect your back
-
Back pain means you shouldn’t be running or lifting things

In reality, those with back pain have the best posture! It’s the lack of variety, usually through fear that creates the ongoing issue. Try clenching your fist all day … pretty sore right?!

Facts about Low Back Pain:
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), in 2020, low back pain (LBP) affected 619 million people globally and it is estimated that the number of cases will increase to 843 million cases by 2050, driven largely by population expansion and ageing.
-
LBP is the single leading cause of disability worldwide and the condition for which the greatest number of people may benefit from rehabilitation.
-
LBP can be experienced at any age, and most people experience LBP at least once in their life.
-
Prevalence increases with age up to 80 years, while the highest number of LBP cases occurs at the age of 50–55 years. LBP is more prevalent in women.
