What to Expect:

  • A thorough assessment to confirm Radial Shockwave is suitable for your condition.

  • Education - Shockwave therapy should not be performed in isolation. It would always be coupled with other conservative treatments such as exercise, activity modification and manual therapy.

 

If appropriate, a course of 3 - 9 sessions will typically be prescribed, depending on the severity of the condition being treated.. 

 

  • Your physiotherapist applies a gel or fluid to the treatment area to improve conduction of the waves.

  • The handpiece is moved over the area where shockwaves are to be applied, typically for a duration of about 5–10 minutes.

 

Radial shockwave therapy is non-invasive, does not require anaesthesia, and has minimal downtime. The pressure waves promote healing, reduce pain, and improve mobility in the treated area. Interested?

The Geeky Bit

For those of you a little more scientifically inclined this is how shockwave therapy works:

 

  1. Generation of Acoustic Waves: The radial shockwave device generates high-energy acoustic waves, which are delivered through a handpiece. These waves spread radially outward from the point of contact.

  2. Pressure Pulses: The acoustic waves create rapid pressure changes in the tissues they pass through, generating both compression and decompression phases. These waves cause microtrauma or stimulation to tissues, including muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

  3. Effect on Tissue:

    • Pain Relief: The shockwaves help to disrupt pain signals and trigger the release of pain-relieving endorphins. They also reduce the sensitivity of pain receptors in the affected area.

    • Collagen Stimulation: Radial shock waves stimulate collagen production, which promotes the healing of damaged tissues, particularly tendons and ligaments.

    • Improved Blood Flow: The shockwaves increase circulation to the treated area, enhancing nutrient delivery and accelerating tissue repair.

    • Breakdown of Calcifications: In cases of tendon calcifications (such as calcific shoulder tendinopathy), the shockwaves help break down the calcified deposits, facilitating their reabsorption by the body.

  4. No Direct Contact with Bone: Unlike focused shockwave therapy (which targets deeper tissue layers), radial shockwaves are less intense and only affect the superficial layers of the tissue. This is why radial shockwave therapy is often used for conditions like tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and other soft tissue injuries.
