Arthritis

This is an umbrella term for lots of different pathologies and the exact translation is “inflammation within the joint”.

A common thought people have is - “It’s arthritis, there is nothing that can be done” – that is simply not true, there is always something that can be done.

No physio will be able to take the arthritis away. But if we can settle the inflammation within the joint(s) down before working on your muscle strength to give the joint more control, then you can begin to return to your usual activities.

According to the British Medical Journal (BMJ), 1 in 5 people over the age of 60 will develop some form of hip pain often being diagnosed with Osteoarthritis (OA) and given tablets whilst you wait for a hip replacement. However, there are MANY other potential causes of hip pain, and knowledge of how best to manage OA is improving every day.

With expert assessment skills and expert knowledge, we are here to help guide you beyond googling the ‘best exercises for hip pain’, or just copying those given to your neighbour or family member which you’ve been giving a try.

Don't just take our word for it! There are 100’s of people we have helped with arthritis and they are now living happy and healthy lifestyles, you could be next.

There are different types of arthritis:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Rheumatiod Arthritis

  • Gout

  • Psoratic Arthritis

  • Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (Children)

And other conditions that fall into the arthritis category.

Physiotherapy is an important part of treatment for most people with arthritis. We are part of a team of healthcare professionals who help you to resume or maintain an active and independent life both at home and work.

Osteoarthritis:

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a very common condition which can affect any joint in the body.  It is a naturally occurring pathology which can be affected by many things including; diet, genetics, jobs, previous injury/surgery and much more.   The most commonly affected joints include the: Hands (ends of the fingers and at the base and ends of the thumbs), knees and hips.

One of the most common conversations we have is around the diagnosis, treatment and management of arthritis.  There is so much information out there, but not all of it is particularly helpful and often not even accurate.

The reality is, if you are over 40 you are likely to have signs of OA on a scan but that doesn’t mean the OA is the cause of your pain.
